Cabo San Lucas isn’t just a party spot There are plenty of low-key places that don’t involve night clubs

On my way down to Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas, I recalled all the things I’d heard about this little bit of paradise tucked away on the tip of the Baja peninsula. Sure, I’d heard gorgeous, scenic and sunny, but I’d also heard crowded, commercialized and expensive.

What I actually found was nothing like I expected. Yes, when it comes to nightlife, parts of Cabo can be a bit over the top. Downtown, I discovered the gong show club known as El Squid Row, and then there’s Cabo Wabo, where I was greeted with a large  mob of young, loud, and somewhat polluted partiers drinking six dollar cervazas, and even more expensive margaritas.

Moving on , I soon stumbled on an unassuming little oasis just off the beaten path.  It was a little outdoor joint called Cabo Blue.  Now, this was more my speed, and more importantly, it appealed to my cheap side. I was astounded that this joint served…one dollar beers!  You read right. Frosty cervezas for a measly buck! Amazing to think in this day and age you can have drinks and a great night out for only $10. Or in my case, $15. Or was it $20?

Staying with that low-key laid-back vibe, I stayed at the very new Grand Solimar resort. No loud poolside bingo games or drunken conga lines at this place. Just great food and one of the nicest beaches I’ve seen in Mexico!

To cap off a hard day of lounging I headed to Medano beach to a funky little eatery called The Office. Not many places I can think of where you can  enjoy a chicken enchilada while dipping your toes in the ocean. The open air tables are that close to the water. Sure, parts of Cabo can resemble spring break in Cancun, but there’s plenty of places to kick back and relax and just take it easy amigos.
