Los Cabos, Mexico

Apicturesque destination on the southernmost tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos refers to a pair of towns. Cabo San Lucas, which sits where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortéz (or Gulf of California), is home to a large marina and much of the nightlife for which the region is known; San José del Cabo, about 20 miles northeast on the Sea of Cortéz, is a more relaxed, traditional Mexican village.

The corridor that connects the two towns is home to a number of resorts, many of them of the exclusive, luxury variety. And the area has become a popular destination for Hollywood types and other upscale jet-setters, due in part to its convenient location: It's a short flight from Southern California, yet very comfortably distant (1,000 miles) from the closest border-town violence.

The area also is in the running to further publicize its profile and welcome world leaders, as Los Cabos is a finalist to host the 2012 G-20 Summit. (This year's G-20 Summit will take place in Cannes, France, Nov. 3-4, at which point next year's location will be announced.)

High satisfaction rating Los Cabos topped Mexico's beach destinations in a recent survey measuring traveler satisfaction, conducted by the nation's secretary of tourism. The region scored an impressive 9.1 out of 10 in a report that included assessments of lodging, food and beverage, transportation, security and the airport, among other categories. In all, 22 cities took part in the study, including 11 other beach destinations.

Many Los Cabos destinations place a premium on VIP-type service. The luxury property Las Ventanas al Paraiso, for instance, a 71-suite resort operated by Rosewood, recently introduced a private VIP airport lounge. The resort's "Airport Hosts" -- assistants who have helped hotel guests navigate the airport arrival process since 2005 -- are now certified with the airport, giving them clearance to escort guests through the security, immigration and customs arrival processes. Guests are whisked through on arrival and invited to the new VIP lounge. For $20 per person, they can relax with luxury seating, Wi-Fi, and unlimited snacks and adult beverages. The resort has event space for up to 60 attendees for receptions and up to 36 for classroom-style seating.

New on the scene Los Cabos' newest resort, the 119-suite Grand Solmar Land's End Resort & Spa, Cabo San Lucas, opened for business early this year. Solmar's fifth property in the area, the hotel sits on a dramatic perch at the tip of the peninsula. Meeting facilities are available at Solmar's nearby 260-room Playa Grande Resort.

Future plans include a 124-villa Ritz-Carlton Reserve, the first such property to open in Mexico. The San José del Cabo resort is slated to open in 2014, in Puerto Los Cabos.
